Clear Glass Window Installation

Dear Friends in Christ,

In ongoing thanksgiving of our many gifts given to the Renewing the Gift Capital Campaign, here are some pictures of the repaired (and now fully functional!) windows in the narthex entryway, and in the back corner of the nave. Special thanks to Alden Whitham of Olde Window Restorers in Warner, and to his apprentice Katie.

A couple of craft notes that some of you will especially enjoy; they have retained the original spring steel latching mechanisms, and effective weatherstripping with thin brass sheets. The glass itself was retained, even where cracked, by repairing it with lead solder (as with stained glass). We did this especially because, as Alden pointed out, the window panes were all cut originally from one single sheet of glass. Preserving these panes, you can see the subtle wave-patterns continuing across from one pane to the next.

Also, spawning delightful imaginings of what some craftsman was up to 199 years ago, there are twice as many mortises as necessary along the frame edges. That is, some poor soul hand cut all the mortises...in the wrong places...for every single window, and then realized their mistake and had to recut them. Or perhaps received some updated instruction! Who knows! But there they sit, a testament to even more patience and care even than you would think when looking at these masterworks as installed.

Pictures below! And when you admire them in person, just a heads up that the final touches are still being added to the window stays (Yes, we know they are bowed out at the moment).

In Christ,

Reed
